Faith by the Word, not by the style

Style  of preaching can be defined as the tone or cadence a minister brings when bringing the Word of God. Cadence can be defined as modulation or inflection of voice. Some would say accent. Getting caught up in the style of preaching can be a hindrance to you receiving the Word of God. God wants to get the Word to you and He will use who He will use to do that. If you get caught up by the style of the preacher, you may never get to the Word that God is trying to get to you. What happens in those cases is that the ears can become dull of hearing as described in Hebrews 5:11-14 and the mind can be closed as discussed in Ephesians 4:17-18. What matters is the Word of God. If  you are not hearing the Word – which you can measure by scriptures being read – then you need to remove yourself from that environment because there is no way that faith in God can come.

In the book of Revelations we see where the Word says – He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. You have to have an ear to hear. Your attraction has to be to the Word – in other words you should be able to look past gender and race differences to hear the spoken Word. Your faith in God is going to be by the Word of God – so for growth you must have Word. Measure who you are hearing by how much Word is coming forth not how much emotion and excitement are generated.

I remember growing up hearing the term cat preacher. That term would be used to define a preacher who would get real shrill and loud and cat-like in speech when preaching. I remember that style of preaching being a turnoff to a certain family member – so that even if Word was coming forth, it didn’t matter as much because the family member couldn’t get past the package. The same thing can happen with attire – sometimes the preacher’s robe can be a distraction or the choir, or other elements of the service. When things like that happen you have to take your concerns to God. If God said faith pleases Him and your growth in faith is by growth in the Word, then He is going to want you to get the Word so that your faith will grow. If you are not getting the Word you need to seek wisdom from God as to how to deal with that situation.

I will make this point. Word is not just restricted to the church that you attend and it doesn’t just come forth on Sundays and Wednesdays. God will lead you to someone on TV or the internet to hear a particular Word, or He may have you visit a certain church or turn on a certain radio program. Don’t limit God as to how He wants to get the Word to you. He is seeking your growth in the knowledge of Him. Please send us any comments or questions and check out our website at
