I am starting a new series titled Overcoming Temptation. We all need to know that we can overcome the temptation to do things that are not good for us; things that are outside of God’s plan for our lives. Overcoming is in God. There is no overcoming apart from God. Understanding this reality is key in you overcoming the temptations that you will face in this life.
I want to start this lesson talking about thoughts. The thoughts that come to you are what bring about the temptation. Remember that thoughts can only come from one of two places. Thoughts either come from God or they come from the devil. Thoughts from the devil are designed to lead to our destruction, while thoughts from God are to lead us into the abundant life. (John 10:10)
Romans 12:1-2 teach us that we are to renew our minds to the Word of God. What that means is that we have to renew our “thoughts” to the Word of God. If we hear things that are not consistent with the Word of God, we have to dismiss those thoughts. Now understand that the devil will use anyway possible to get a thought to you, even your dreams. You may dream of doing things that you would not even entertain doing in real life. The devil’s goal here is to get the thought in your mind, even if through a dream. You can take that thought that came from that dream and still act on in and that action will work at producing the result that the devil intends for you. He is a destroyer of relationships, marriages, jobs, families and communities and many times that destruction comes from thoughts he brings to us while we are sleeping.
Proverbs 4:20-23 are verses that really sum up what this part of the series is trying to get across. I will share more scripture in the upcoming radio broadcast, but you see from this verse where God links His Word with our thoughts. What will save us in every temptation is to have the thoughts of God. We see from these verses that the thoughts of God are linked to the Word of God, so if we spend time learning the Word of God, we will have the thoughts of God and the substrate from which to overcome temptation.
