Do you have an idol?

I have been teaching the 4th Man Series for the last several weeks. If you have not gotten the lessons from this series I would recommend that you get them. The teaching is based on the first 3 chapters of the book of Daniel. We learned that Daniel was a man of God who was a model for us in a system that did not honor or serve God. Even in this system, through God, Daniel was able to tell the king his dream, interpret the king’s dream, and tell the reason for the dream. In the dream the stone that was cut without hands hit and tore down all of the other kingdoms that were represented by the image as described by Daniel and discussed in the king’s dream.

I am now moving into chapter 3. This is the chapter that talks about the three Hebrew boys and their encounter with the king and him wanting them to bow down to the false god that he created. Anything that is worshipped that is not God is an idol. In todays time an idol can be anything, from houses, to cars, to clothes, to people, etc. A good way to look at idolatry is to think about the creation. God is the creator and everything that He created, as discussed in the first few chapters of Genesis, is known as the creation. The creator is to be worshipped by the creation. The creation should not be worshipping itself.

Romans 1:25 – Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen

We learn from this verse of scripture that the truth of God can be turned into a lie. This is what happened in the Garden of Eden where the devil changed God’s word and Eve bought the counterfeit and through Adam’s sin death passed to all and we all then needed Jesus to be brought back in right standing with God. I have taught on this in the past and if you have any questions about it, please send me a message and I will elaborate. For the purposes of this post I will continue on. Romans 1:25 talks about a worshipping and serving the creature more than the creator. This is known as idolatry. Worship of gold, silver, pearls and other metals or stones is idolatry.

Worship of your children is idolatry. I am sure you are wondering how you can worship your children. Anytime you put your children and the needs of your children before God, they have become idols and whether you actually bow down to them, you are worshipping them. God teaches us in Matthew 6:33 to seek the Kingdom of God first. That means before your children. Protection from your children is in God and if you want your children to grow to become the men and women of God that He called them to be you have to realize that you can’t rear them apart from the instruction of the Holy Spirit, so you need to put God first so that they can have all that they need to live the prosperous life. They also need to understand that God is their source, not you.

Let me give a practical example here. Say for instance your child needs a new pair of pants for school but the church needs a donation to replace the carpet in the sanctuary. That seems like a pretty easy scenario right? Well, what do you do? Do you buy your child the pants for school and not give anything toward the carpet? Do you give for the carpet and believe God for the money for the pants . . . or for someone to give you the pants? I really would like to hear some thoughts on this.

Neither answer is correct. When you limit God to two answer choices you limit Him for what He can do in your life. God is limitless and you should not limit Him to two choices. Ephesians 3:20-21 teaches us that he can do above all that we ask or think. What you should do is go to God in this situation and see what he would have you do. He may reveal to you that your neighbor’s son is going to be giving away some pants that would be just right for your child or that the carpet company is donating the carpet to the church. Don’t limit God in His way on manifesting what you need. Trust Him and believe that He will.
