Getting away from the Word . . .

You may not know it or not, but the effect of Christians and church are woven into every aspect of your life. In other words, who you surround yourself with is who you will begin to look like, smell like, talk like and THINK like. That is why the Bible teaches in  Hebrews . . .

Hebrews 10:25

King James Version (KJV)

25 Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Let’s examine this verse of scripture. It is written to Christians. So we see that we are supposed to assemble together. That does not mean exclusively church, but it includes church. But Christians should visit each other, go to lunch together, go to dinner together, go shopping together, play golf together, go exercise together, etc.   Look at the next part of that scripture. It says “as the manner of some is” . That means that there are some Christians who don’t go to church and read their Bibles and pray at home and think that alone is ok and that they don’t need to be part of a church family. Well, that is wrong and folks who do that are outside of where God wants them to be, and if they have a relationship with Christ, the Holy Spirit will convict them and let them know.

Well, why should we assemble ourselves together? The reason why is that we are supposed to exhort one another. What is exhortation? It is strongly encouraging or urging someone forward in the Lord.  Obviously the Lord knew that we needed this and that we need to do this. Wow! That means we are to exhort and we need to be exhorted. That is one of the reasons we go to church. To get encouraged in the Word and to encourage others. This is so important as we know that the enemy is as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. When you are in a place that you are not exhorting or being exhorted, you are in a place now that will allow the devil to devour you. You will notice that when you stop going to church and stop hanging out with Christians . . . you start to move away from the Word and you become more like the world. What is happening here is a rebellion against Romans 12:2 which teaches us to come out from among the world and renew our minds to the Word of God. If you are not around believers who confess and live the Word of God, whatever they believe and confess will be what you will begin to believe and confess and there will be a point where you won’t even recognize who you are in the mirror. Don’t be led away from the Word. Fellowship with believers and seek God concerning the body of Christ (church) that you are supposed to be a part of.
