I came across this Washington Post article and was prompted by a blogger to provide comment on what we are seeing now in terms of the church moving into reality TV. Is this of God? Is this really reality? Is the church now trying to use the tactics of the world to get the message of Jesus out? Uh, how bout NO. As I have said repeatedly, go to the scripture to see what the real deal is about this situation. Everything must be approached in the light of the Word.
This is going to be a lengthy post. I encourage you to take your time reading through it and to get your Bible and look up the scriptures shared as they will bring light and if you meditate on them, understanding and revelation straight from father God.
Let’s look at reality shows. Now they are called reality shows because they are supposed to be based on “real” life. The world wants you to think this is real life, but it really is not. Even the shows that show people out in the wilderness or jungle with no food – having to eat bugs, catch fish and build fire to cook food and stay warm and make their own shelter . . . is far from reality. I am almost sure that one of those people have gotten a candy bar from the camera man. Have you thought about the camera man? Do you think that he is starving as he takes all of those pictures for you to see? Where do you think the camera man sleeps? And let’s really make you want to watch by making the cast members naked! And we will call it Naked and Afraid . . . and we know that’s not of God. In Genesis we see how when Adam and Eve fell and weren’t clothed by God anymore, He made clothes for them . . . so God doesn’t want you naked and we see in 2 Timothy 1:7 that God has not given us the spirit of fear. So you know this is foolishness as it is contrary to the Word, but we all know flesh sells and their goal is to get you to watch the program. I get offended by those shows that depict people who decide they are going to brave the elements and gather their own food and build their own shelter . . . and then when the show is over, go back and sleep in their nice warm bed, in their nice warm house . . . when there are homeless people, poor people, hurting people who need help and need to know that God loves them and wants them to have all that they need to live and have an abundance here on earth for them and the work of the Kingdom. Ask God to show you what’s going on with these reality shows. It is obvious that there is a degree to which that stuff is staged and is intended to draw a reaction.
Let’s get back to the Word here. So, reality shows are NOT reality. Let me show you why in the scripture. Go to 2 Corinthians 4:18. The first part of this verse says that we don’t fix our eyes to what we see. So what we see is not our reality. . . that is if you are a Christian. If you are not a Christian it doesn’t have to be your reality, but may be because you have not made Jesus the Lord of your life. Christians should walk by faith and not by sight as we learn from 2 Corinthians 5:7. If we make decisions by what we see, we are in the devil’s territory and are not being led by the Spirit of God. (Romans 8:13-15) There are claims in this article that people need to see these pastors in their daily lives to know that they are real people, etc. That they have real struggles and trials. That is a lie . . . our example is Jesus and once we get our eyes off of Him, that’s when we get into error. Our instruction is supposed to come from the scriptures. The scriptures are Spirit and they are life (John 6:63) – that is reality. See how much Word you see and hear when these shows come out. No preacher or pastor anywhere is your standard. Your standard is the Word of God. See 2 Timothy 3:16-17
Let me get back to 2 Corinthians 4:18. It goes on to say that what is seen is temporary. You have to get a revelation of that. If folks had a revelation of that they would know that the flashy houses, cars and other THINGS that are shown on these shows are temporary and WILL NOT LAST. Don’t misunderstand me here, God wants you to have the things. Matthew 6:33 lets us know this and it also lets us know that when we seek the Kingdom first, those things will be added to us – and HE WANTS YOU TO BE RICH!! Not rich so you can by a bunch of houses and cars, but rich so that you can be a blessing to the Kingdom of God. God has an agenda and involved in that agenda is sharing the gospel to a dying world. That’s why He wants you to have the money, so you can use it to work for the Kingdom of God. Any Christian who questions whether God wants you rich should study 2 Corinthians 8:9. Jesus took our poverty that we can be rich! Yes, that’s money – gotten through God. See, you can get it some other way but with your way will be toil. Look at Proverbs 10:22 which teaches that the blessing of the Lord maketh RICH and adds no sorrow to it. It took me while to understand this verse of scripture . . . I am still dealing with sorrow because I tried to be rich apart from God. Now understand, if you don’t read 2 Corinthians 8:9, receive it and believe it, you won’t be rich in the way that God can make you rich, and understand that’s ok. You can be saved and die and go to heaven and not walk in the wealth that God made available for you.
Ok, let me get back to 2 Corinthians 4:18. He goes on to say that the unseen is more real than what we see. That’s how you know this stuff is not of God. They aren’t talking about the unseen – teaching about the Spiritual things of God . . . they try to mix Word with the world and you can’t do that. You cannot serve two masters. (Matthew 6:24) This reality show movement of the church is a plan of the enemy to keep the church away from the Word and show the unbeliever that the church is no different from the world. What a dangerous thing. There are so many unsaved folks seeing church folks lead dead, spiritless lives, in the club on Saturday and the choir stand on Sunday . . . being tossed to and fro by every wind and doctrine (Ephesians 4:14) and not holding fast to their confession of faith without wavering. (Hebrews 10:23)
Now lets move a little deeper in this. What about the pastors who get involved with this. You must understand that a pastor is a ministry gift of God to the church. Let’s look at Ephesians 4:11-16. Pastors along with other ministry gifts are for the perfecting of the saints for the work of the ministry. How does this reality show plan perfect the body of Christ for the work of the ministry? I don’t think this is anything more than entertainment. This verse goes on to say for the edifying (building up) of the body of Christ. See, when you come across a Pastor, Teacher, Evangelist, Apostle or Prophet, you should leave that experience built up . . . you should feel better than you did before you encountered that person. Expect that. Now go back to Ephesians 4. Verse 13 talks about unity in the faith – we just got through talking about division coming from the enemy – – God is callings us to grow in Christ and our ministry gift folks (Pastors and others mentioned) are supposed to be there to help us grow in Christ!
Ok, let me bring this to a close. So what should a Pastor be leading you to? The Word of God. That is why this is so sad . . . In John 1 we learn that in the BEGINNING WAS THE WORD . . . so if the Word is and was and is to come, if the Word was at the beginning – then what the Pastor needs to teach and preach is the Word of God and if the Word of God goes forth there will be fruit and miracles, and revelation knowledge and gifts of the Spirit in operation . . .The Bible says in Mark 16:17 that signs and wonders will follow them that believe . . . so, this reality show should bear fruit – if it is not bearing fruit as identified in Galatians 5:22, God aint in it. Bad english, good point. Now God may have someone go on that show to bring the Word . . . I believe that is why He has Sow the Word on Facebook, but God will make it plain and the Word will go forth. If you are not being taught the Word of God from your pastor, you need to seek God as to if you are in the right fellowship of believers. Beware of reality shows and weigh everything that you see and hear and read . . . by the Word of God. Yes, that’s any TV show, internet broadcast, you tube video, newspaper article, magazine article, sermon . . . and the list goes on.
