An apology is the first step . . . but what’s in the heart?

I was waiting to give a talk to some undergrad students recently, and I was sitting in the classroom with some of the students since I was early, and one of the students walked in the classroom and cursed because she forgot to dress formally. She then went to sit down with her friends, and then realized after her friends told her that I was the speaker, that she had used profanity in front of me. She got my attention and then she apologized. I accepted her apology, but the words were out there and just because she said she was sorry, is the profanity and what is driving the profanity still in her heart?

The answer to this is a most definite yes. Let’s go to the Word here. The Bible teaches in Matthew 15:11 that what comes out of the mouth is what defiles a man. The reason for this is because what comes out of the mouth is what has been put in the heart. Matthew 12:35 teaches us that what is in our hearts is what will come out of our mouths. God is love and a person who is born again should have the Words of God coming out of his or her mouth. This young person cursed . . . and that let me know what was down on the inside of her.  If her heart had been filled with the Word, so much so that she was saturated with it . . . the Word would be the only thing that could come forth.  I don’t mean here that she would be spouting scripture, but the fruit of the Spirit as mentioned in Galatians is what we would see . . . putting another persons interests and desires above her own, showing love, kindness, humility, meekness, etc.

This does not mean that she is not a Christian. Here me clear here. She may have accepted Christ as her personal savior . . . but she hasn’t renewed her mind to the Word of God and she has not received and lived out sound Biblical teaching . . . she may go to church. Wow! Are we saying here that a person can be a Christian and go to church and curse? Yes we are. You can confess Christ and not grow up in Him and not walk in the Spirit . . . it’s great that she apologized, but her heart needs to be filled with the Word of God. If you have received Christ but it seems like you can’t put off the old man, we would like to share some scripture with you. Send us a message at sow-the-word@hotmail.com or reply to this post.
